Morphogenesis in Candida albicans.
Candida albicans is termed a dimorphic fungus because it proliferates in either a yeast form or a hyphal form. The switch between these forms is the result of a complex interplay of external and internal factors and is coordinated in part by polarity-regulating proteins that are conserved among eukaryotic cells. However, yeast and hyphal cells are not the only morphological states of C. albican...
متن کاملImportance of the Candida albicans cell wall during commensalism and infection.
An imbalance of the normal microbial flora, breakage of epithelial barriers or dysfunction of the immune system favour the transition of the human pathogenic yeast Candida albicans from a commensal to a pathogen. C. albicans has evolved to be adapted as a commensal on mucosal surfaces. As a commensal it has also acquired attributes, which are necessary to avoid or overcome the host defence mech...
متن کاملTranscription factors in Candida albicans - environmental control of morphogenesis.
Awareness of Candida albicans as a major human health threat has risen during recent years. Although infections by C. albicans can be relatively mild and superficial, systemic mycoses often occur in immunocompromised patients, or even as a consequence of long-term therapy with broad-spectrum antibiotics or of chemotherapy (reviewed by Odds, 1988). Effective antifungal agents which are free of s...
متن کاملCandida albicans specializations for iron homeostasis: from commensalism to virulence.
Candida albicans is a fungal commensal-pathogen that persistently associates with its mammalian hosts. Between the commensal and pathogenic lifestyles, this microorganism inhabits host niches that differ markedly in the levels of bioavailable iron. A number of recent studies have exposed C. albicans specializations for acquiring iron from specific host molecules in regions where iron is scarce,...
متن کاملUndecylenic acid inhibits morphogenesis of Candida albicans.
Resilient liners are frequently used to treat denture stomatitis, a condition often associated with Candida albicans infections. Of 10 liners tested, 2 were found to inhibit the switch from the yeast form to hyphae and a third was found to stimulate this switch. The inhibitor was determined to be undecylenic acid.
